This CD presents timeless blues and early jazz from the legendary singer and songwriter Victoria Spivey in collaboration with the Easy Rider Jazz Band, released by the specialist label Ghb. With raw emotional power, earthy humor and a deep sense of tradition, these recordings capture the atmosphere of classic 1920s/1930s blues while benefiting from vivid, modern sound quality. The repertoire focuses on authentic blues numbers and traditional jazz titles that highlight Spivey's expressive voice, her narrative style and her unmistakable phrasing, while the Easy Rider Jazz Band provides a warm, swinging and acoustically rich backing full of brass colors, clarinet lines and a driving rhythm section.
Musically, the album blends New Orleans-inspired small-band jazz with vaudeville-tinged blues, piano-driven grooves and relaxed, mid-tempo swing. The Easy Rider Jazz Band plays with stylistic confidence and respect for the original idiom: collective front-line improvisations, lyrical solos and tight ensemble passages evoke the era of early jazz clubs and barrelhouse joints. The track selection is designed like a musical journey through the classic blues repertoire, with alternating moods between melancholic laments, sly, ironic songs and rousing, danceable pieces. The result is an album that will appeal both to collectors of historical jazz and blues and to newcomers who want a vivid introduction to the roots of American music.
