This LP, the first volume in the series, features part of the 17th National Tour of Jazz at The Philharmonic, a series of concerts initiated by the legendary impresario Norman Granz. Norman Granz was an American jazz record producer and concert promoter who constantly faced down the authorities across the USA by insisting on staging racially integrated shows, preferring to cancel concerts to his own financial loss rather than have his artists play to segregated audiences. A phenomenal Swing Set concert featuring a Septet comprising Roy Eldridge (trumpet), Flip Phillips (saxophone), Illinois Jacquet (saxophone), Oscar Peterson (piano), Herb Ellis (guitar), Ray Brown (bass), Jo Hones (drums). Encapsulates the spirit and essence of post-war modern jazz, and we are delighted to offer over different volumes, the opportunity to hear so many of the best artists of the genre performing together on the same bill with such obvious freedom and elan. A show like this would be good way of demonstrating to the uninitiated what jazz is all about. This release comes from the archives of the San Francisco Traditional Jazz Federation which are lodged with the Archive of Recorded Sound at Stanford University in California. The archive comprises a collection of jazz recordings amassed during the 1950s and 1960s by broadcaster Ken Ackerman, and widely known as the Ackerman Tapes."Jazz At The Philharmonic Seattle 1956 Vol.1" on Vinyl Maxi captures a historic live performance from Norman Granz' legendary Jazz at the Philharmonic concert series, recorded in Seattle in 1956. This release by Acrobat offers a carefully remastered window into the golden age of modern jazz, transporting listeners directly into the charged atmosphere of a mid-50s concert hall. Expect extended solos, spontaneous interplay and the kind of on-stage excitement that made Jazz at the Philharmonic a global phenomenon, with top-tier jazz musicians of the era engaging in spirited musical dialogues and improvisational "battles". The track selection focuses on longer pieces that allow the performers' virtuosity and creativity to unfold, making this edition particularly attractive for collectors and serious jazz enthusiasts. The Vinyl Maxi format underlines the audiophile character of the release, granting the music generous groove space for a warm, dynamic sound image that does justice to the original tapes.
As a mixed-artist recording, this volume emphasizes the stylistic breadth of the Jazz at the Philharmonic concept: swinging up-tempo numbers meet soulful ballads, blues-inflected jams and bop-oriented passages, all united by the energy of a live concert situation. The sequencing of the pieces and the balance between solo features and ensemble passages make this album a compelling listening experience from start to finish. "Jazz At The Philharmonic Seattle 1956 Vol.1" functions both as a time capsule of 1950s concert culture and as an accessible entry point into classic live jazz. The detailed and historically sensitive production makes this record suitable for collectors, jazz historians and newcomers alike, particularly those who appreciate the unique tension and spontaneity of live recordings.
