The album preserves the raw energy, galloping riffs and anthemic choruses of the original "Under Jolly Roger", widely regarded as a milestone that defined the band's signature pirate image and helped shape the early European power- and speed-metal scene. This CD edition offers improved clarity and punch while retaining the analog grit of the 1980s recordings, making it ideal both for long-time fans who want to experience the record with renewed sound and for newcomers discovering this influential era of metal. The expanded version typically includes additional material such as bonus tracks, alternative versions or live recordings from the same creative period, giving deeper insight into the band's development around this landmark release and extending the listening experience beyond the core album.
Running Wild, formed in Germany at the end of the 1970s, earned cult status in the 1980s and 1990s as pioneers of pirate-themed heavy metal. With albums like "Under Jolly Roger" they moved from darker traditional metal into a more epic, melody-driven style, characterized by fast guitar work, commanding vocals and historical or nautical lyrical themes. Their influence can be heard in later power-metal and folk-metal bands that adopted similarly adventurous imagery and storytelling. Across decades and numerous studio albums, the band built a loyal international fanbase, appearing at major festivals and securing their place as one of the defining names of German heavy metal.
Noise Records, the label behind this CD edition, is known for its pivotal role in the rise of European metal from the 1980s onward. The company worked with many influential German and international acts and became synonymous with high-energy, forward-thinking metal releases. Over the years Noise Records has reissued and remastered important catalog titles, often adding bonus material and updated sound to make classic albums accessible to new generations of listeners. This 2017 remaster of "Under Jolly Roger - Expanded Version" reflects that tradition, offering a carefully curated, collector-friendly edition of a key album in Running Wild's discography. | | | Manufacturer No.: |

Michał S. - 08/Feb/2024 Milestone in the group's discography as the beginning of 'pirate era'. I am returning to this album from time to time with a joy. This intro on 'Under Jolly Roger', roaring cannons, the album cover, raw guitar playing... It's just a perfect fusion!
| | Sergey I. - 16/Jul/2019 All in all, Running Wild's first pirate metal album Under Jolly Roger is pretty great. Half the album is made up entirely of Running Wild classics, and as you probably know, these guys have shitloads of good songs. Raw but catchy vocals, raw guitarwork with some unbelievable melodic material on the solos, pretty standard but very effective and heavy drumming, and a powerful bass which is just loud enough. Conclusion: Buy this now.
| | Volodymyr Z. - 14/Nov/2018 Super new edition of the best album! Very good sound!
| | Balazs D. - 02/Sep/2017 Schiff Ahoy!
Third records in a discography are usually regarded as watershed releases, that goes for Under Jolly Roger as well, since this marked the beginning of the "pirate era" of the group. With regards to songwriting, nothing much has changed since Branded and exiled, and I think, this record is inferior to its predecessor, the songs are not as strong than before, still it's a decent effort.
Rolf once again was the main composer, and played bass also.
I have the original version on tape, so even though it's definitely not my favourite RW relese, I've bought it, and it was a good decision: this version manages to eradicate the problems with the original version- it sounded awful. This one is clearer, you notice fine details you've never heard on the original release. The artwork, as with the previous two, is faithfully restored, you also get sleevenotes from Rolf and Malcolm Dome. Te second disc contains the 1991 versions, and once again, the remastering did justice to these songs, because the First years versions sounded awful. The 2003 versions are...meh, let's forget about them. They were massacred by a drum computer.
TLDR: Ready for boarding! It's air guitar time! Pay or flee, hahaha! A nice addition to your collection.
