NIGHT SPECIALDouble vinyl LP pressing. In association with DJ Amir's 180 Proof Records, BBE is honored to present another gem from the small yet significant Strata catalogue. A precursor to New York's Strata East, Detroit's Strata Records was founded in the late 1960s by former Blue Note artist Kenny Cox. Starting life as a music-led community organization, coffee shop studio and venue, Strata released only a few titles as a record label, gaining the imprint a cult following among record collectors and jazz lovers across the globe. Possibly the best known of Strata's releases, The Lyman Woodard Organization's 'Saturday Night Special' is rightly heralded as a jazz fusion classic. Recorded in 1975, 'Saturday Night Special' features organ, electric piano and Mellotron by bandleader Lyman Woodard alongside guitar and bass by Ron English, with drums and percussion by Leonard King, Bud Spangler & Lorenzo "Mr. Rhythm" Brown respectively. Despite the fairly sparse instrumentation, 'Saturday Night Special' lays down an impressive wall of sound, powerfully atmospheric in it's almost low-fi aesthetic. Hinting at more traditional jazz, rhythm & blues, afro-Cuban styles and more, the uniqueness of this album is surely in it's feel: summoning up images of a vast industrial landscape, assembly lines and urban decay. In other words, this record sounds like Detroit.Gatefold sleeve.
Cover track listings and timings omit second part of Saturday Night Special (A1) which is Pt. 1 & Pt. 2 from original album timing correct at 7:07 long. Cheeba Pt.1 & Pt. 2 are combined in C1 so 9:58 long. Cover and label have incorrect length for Cheeba. Side D label incorrectly lists Leonard King as the writer for track D3.
Recorded November 26 and 27, 1973 and Sweetened in January 1975 at Strata Sound Studios, Detroit.
The first group of characters and "THE CARVERY" in each runout text are both etched, and the last 2 groups are stamped."Saturday Night Special" is a landmark LP by the Lyman Woodard Organization, originally recorded in the mid-1970s and celebrated as a cornerstone of deep jazz-funk and soulful fusion. Centered around Lyman Woodard's warm, groove-driven organ playing, the album unfolds as a rich tapestry of hypnotic rhythms, earthy bass lines and subtly psychedelic textures. Each track flows organically, blending jazz improvisation with funk, soul and a touch of Latin flavor, making the record equally suited for attentive listening and late-night sessions. Renowned among collectors and DJs alike, "Saturday Night Special" has become a cult classic, frequently cited for its deep grooves, spiritual atmosphere and timeless production aesthetic that still resonates strongly in contemporary beat culture.
The Lyman Woodard Organization was a Detroit-based ensemble with a distinctive approach to jazz-funk: raw, emotional and steeped in the musical heritage of the city's soul and R&B scenes. Lyman Woodard, primarily an organist and keyboardist, built his reputation in the 1960s and 1970s both as a leader and as a collaborator in Detroit's fertile music community. His work with the Organization is particularly revered for its combination of tight rhythm-section interplay and spacious, exploratory solos, giving the band a unique sonic identity that stands apart from more polished mainstream fusion of the time. Over the years, the group's recordings have gained increasing recognition among crate diggers, reissue labels and modern producers searching for authentic, sample-ready grooves and deep musicality.
This edition is released by BBE Music, a label known internationally for its dedication to quality reissues, rare groove excavations and forward-thinking soul, jazz, hip-hop and electronic music. Since its founding, BBE Music has built a strong reputation among audiophiles, collectors and DJs for treating archival material with respect: carefully sourced masters, thoughtful liner notes and high production standards. The label's catalog includes numerous re-discoveries of overlooked classics, alongside contemporary releases that carry the same spirit of musical depth and authenticity. With "Saturday Night Special," BBE Music continues its mission of preserving and presenting essential recordings from the global underground, making a pivotal work by the Lyman Woodard Organization accessible to a new generation of listeners on high-quality LP. | | | Manufacturer No.: |
