Description:Take A Look At Yourself is an album by Eddie Russ, released in 2017. The album is a soul LP. -
Keyboardist Eddie Russ hailed from Pittsburg and played with many of the greats including Sarah Vaughn, Benny Golson, Stan Getz and Dizzy Gillespie. Eddie is somewhat of an enigma, but he has always been held in high regard in the UK, and he finally was able to perform here in London at the Jazz café in the early 90's a few years before his untimely demise. His debut album 'Fresh Out' was recorded for the Jazz Masters label and includes the jazz dance classic 'The Lope Song', he also contributed heavily to Sonny Stitt's 'Tornado' album on that label. His band The Mixed Bag also made an album for the Detroit Tribe label. In 1976 he signed to John Richbourg's Sound Stage 7 label and made two great jazz funk albums which were released on the Nashville's Monument label and like his debut were produced by Bob Crawford. From the 1978 album 'Take A Look At Yourself' the title track is a monster percussive jazz funker on which Eddie's keyboards really shine through and Jackie Holiday's soulful vocals really top it off. She also does a great job of the Emotions 'Don't Ask My Neighbours', and Renee Coles adds her vocals to the infectious rare groove version of Quincy Jones 'I Heard That'.
"Take A Look At Yourself" is a sought-after jazz-funk LP by pianist and bandleader Eddie Russ, reissued by the respected reissue specialist SOUL BROTHER. On this album, Russ fuses spiritual jazz, soulful grooves and driving funk into a warm, organic sound that feels both timeless and deeply rooted in the 1970s club and radio culture. The arrangements are rich in Fender Rhodes textures, tight rhythm sections and melodic horn lines that invite both close listening and relaxed home listening. The title "Take A Look At Yourself" underscores the reflective, uplifting character of the music, which alternates between meditative passages and energetic, danceable moments. This LP edition is aimed at collectors of rare groove and jazz-funk as well as newcomers who want to discover the deeper layers of soulful jazz beyond the mainstream.

Eddie Russ is known among jazz connoisseurs as one of the important, if often underrated, figures of American jazz-funk and spiritual jazz of the 1970s. As a pianist and keyboardist, he developed a characteristic style that combines groove-oriented funk with harmonically rich jazz, making his recordings highly sought after in DJ and collector circles. His albums have long enjoyed cult status in the rare-groove scene, and original pressings reach high prices on the collector's market. "Take A Look At Yourself" reflects his artistic signature: soulful melodies, deep grooves and a spiritual atmosphere that has ensured his work a lasting place among jazz-funk aficionados.

SOUL BROTHER is a renowned UK label and record store specializing in high-quality reissues of soul, jazz, funk and rare groove. With great attention to detail, the label brings hard-to-find classics and overlooked masterpieces back onto vinyl and CD, often with carefully remastered sound and lovingly prepared packaging. Collectors and DJs appreciate SOUL BROTHER for its consistent focus on musical quality and authenticity, as well as for its contribution to preserving the heritage of soul and jazz-funk. A SOUL BROTHER release is widely regarded as a sign of musical relevance and a reliable indication that the album in question is a genuine genre gem.

This LP edition of "Take A Look At Yourself" is therefore much more than a simple re-release: it is a carefully curated opportunity to rediscover an artist who helped shape the sound of spiritual jazz-funk. Whether as a highlight in a rare-groove DJ set, as an audiophile listening experience at home or as a collector's item for lovers of soulful jazz, this record offers deep musical substance and enduring replay value.
