Cet opus puissant combine habilement les éléments du thrash et du heavy traditionnel avec des riffs de guitare percutants et une batterie énergique accompagnés d'un chant imposant qui caractérise la signature sonore du groupe. Parmi les titres phares figurent « Beyond the Black », « Gods of Wrath » ainsi qu'une reprise remarquable de « Highway Star » de Deep Purple. Avec ce disque fondateur salué par la critique comme par le public métal international dès sa sortie, le groupe s'est rapidement imposé comme pionnier sur la scène américaine émergente dans les années 80.
Originaire initialement de San Francisco puis relocalisé à Aberdeen (Washington), le groupe se distingue par sa virtuosité technique et ses prestations scéniques intenses ayant inspiré toute une génération d'artistes issus tant du thrash que du power metal ; leurs premiers albums sont aujourd'hui considérés comme incontournables dans l'histoire du genre.
