| Description: | Vinyl LP pressing. 2009 album from the veteran singer/songwriter. Hurley's songwriting talent hasn't gone unnoticed by a new generation of musicians. In recent years, he was invited to tour with Alt-Country heroes Son Volt and Lucinda Williams. He's also shared bills with Smog and Palace Brothers, played with the Giant Sand rhythm section, and has, of course, appeared with (and been covered by) Vetiver and appeared on their records. His songs have also been covered by indie stars Cat Power and Yo La Tengo, among others. 12 tracks.Album is credited to "Michael Hurley & Ida" on LP labels. Performers and title are listed as follows on spine and back of album cover:
MICHAEL HURLEY + IDA CON SNOCK + IDA
"Ida Con Snock" is a warm, ramshackle, and deeply human LP by American outsider-folk legend Michael Hurley, released on the independent label Gnomonsong. Recorded with a loose, living-room intimacy, the album feels like being invited into Hurley's private universe of wry storytelling, tender melancholy, and crooked humor. Acoustic guitars, occasional fiddle and gentle rhythm backing create a homespun folk-blues atmosphere that is both timeless and unmistakably his own. The songs wander between lonesome ballads, back-porch country, and gently shuffling blues, held together by Hurley's distinctive, weathered voice and his gift for small, poetic details.
Lyrically, "Ida Con Snock" moves through tales of love, memory, odd characters, and drifting lives, always with Hurley's characteristic mix of sincerity and sly wit. The production keeps everything unpolished and close-up, preserving creaks, breaths, and the sense of musicians playing together in a room rather than chasing perfection in a studio. This gives the LP a rare authenticity: it sounds like a lost classic you might discover on vinyl in a dusty crate, yet it feels immediate and alive.
Michael Hurley is a cult figure of American folk music, active since the 1960s and admired for his idiosyncratic songwriting, hand-drawn artwork, and stubborn independence. Over the decades, he has built a dedicated following in the underground and folk scenes, with a body of work that influenced generations of songwriters. His albums have long been cherished by collectors and have inspired reissues and tributes, cementing his reputation as one of the great "outsider" voices in modern American song.
Gnomonsong, the label behind this LP, is a carefully curated independent imprint known for releasing singular, characterful music that sits between folk, psych, and experimental songwriting. Instead of chasing trends, Gnomonsong focuses on artists with a distinct voice and long-term artistic integrity. With high-quality vinyl pressings and an ear for timeless songwriting, the label has become a home for records that reward repeated listening and appeal to collectors and adventurous music fans alike. "Ida Con Snock" fits perfectly into this philosophy: a lovingly presented LP for listeners who seek authentic, hand-crafted music off the beaten path. |
