| Description: | Digitally remastered edition. The $5.98 E.P.: Garage Days Re-Revisited is an extended play by American heavy metal band Metallica. It was released on August 21, 1987 by Elektra Records. The extended play consisted entirely of covers of late-'70s and early-'80s new wave of British heavy metal bands and hardcore punk music rehearsed in Lars Ulrich's soundproofed garage and then recorded in Los Angeles over the course of six days. It was the group's first recording to feature it's new bassist Jason Newsted, and also the band's first release following the death of second bassist Cliff Burton. They expanded the limits of thrash, using speed and volume not for their own sake, but to enhance their intricately structured compositions.Recorded and mixed at A&M, & Conway, Los Angeles.
Original songs by:
Helpless - Diamond Head (1980)
The Small Hours - Holocaust (1983)
The Wait - Killing Joke (1980)
Carsh Course In Brain Surgery - Budgie (1974)
Last Caress/Green Hell - The Misfits (1978)"5.98 EP - Garage Days Re-Revisited" on CD is a powerful snapshot of Metallica at a crucial turning point in their career. Originally conceived as a raw, no-frills recording of cover songs, the EP captures the band in the late 1980s paying tribute to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and other underground influences that shaped their sound. Fast, aggressive and deliberately unpolished, these tracks showcase Metallica's ability not just to replicate, but to reinterpret their heroes' material with crushing riffs, precise drumming and an unmistakable vocal intensity. The CD format delivers this energy with clear, dynamic sound, while preserving the rough, "garage" atmosphere that made the EP a cult favorite among fans.
Lyrically and musically, the songs testify to Metallica's deep roots in heavy metal history: instead of radio-friendly hits, the band chose deeper cuts and cult classics and turned them into their own high-octane versions. For listeners, this CD is both a history lesson and a pure adrenaline rush, ideal for those who want to explore the band's influences or complete their Metallica collection with an important, often cited release that bridges the gap between earlier thrash albums and later global success.
The EP is released under the Blackened Recordings label, Metallica's own imprint that stands for artistic independence and high production standards. As a band-owned label, Blackened Recordings focuses on preserving the integrity of the original material while offering fans carefully prepared editions and reissues from the Metallica catalog. This approach ensures that releases like "5.98 EP - Garage Days Re-Revisited" remain available in high quality and with great attention to detail.
Metallica themselves are one of the most influential heavy metal bands in history. Emerging from the early 1980s thrash metal scene, they became global superstars with landmark albums such as "Master of Puppets" and "...And Justice for All," and later reached an even broader audience with the self-titled "Black Album." Known for their extreme live energy, intricate riffing and genre-defining songwriting, they have shaped generations of bands and listeners. Countless awards, multi-platinum certifications and sold-out stadium tours around the world underscore Metallica's central role in rock and metal history, and "5.98 EP - Garage Days Re-Revisited" offers a rare, direct glimpse into the band's roots and influences. |
