| Description: | Produced by Creed Taylor and originally issued on the CTI label in 1975, Jim Hall's Concierto followed the path of Miles Davis' celebrated Sketches of Spain in presenting, among other tunes, an arrangement of Joaquín Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez." The LP was an all-star venture, with Hall accompanied by such luminaries as Chet Baker, Paul Desmond, Roland Hanna, Ron Carter and Steve Gadd. Desmond had along history of recording with the guitarist, but this was Hall and Baker's first out of just two recorded encounters. Concierto received a 4 ½ rating on AllMusic, with reviewer Anthony Tognazzini stating that it "ranks among the best albums of Hall's superb catalog and the personnel is a jazz lover's dream come true.""Concierto" is a timeless jazz LP by master guitarist Jim Hall, reissued by the audiophile-minded label Elemental. Recorded with an all-star ensemble, this album is widely regarded as one of Hall's most inspired studio sessions, blending lyrical sophistication with subtle swing and deep musical conversation. At the heart of "Concierto" is Jim Hall's unmistakable guitar tone: warm, clear and understated, yet harmonically adventurous. His playing unfolds in long, singing lines and finely shaped chords, leaving ample space for the music to breathe and for his partners to respond. The result is a highly dynamic, yet intimate listening experience that rewards both focused attention and relaxed, late-night listening. The repertoire on "Concierto" revolves around extended, thoughtfully constructed performances that balance structure and improvisation. Hall shapes each solo with architectural logic, building from melodic simplicity to rich harmonic detail without ever resorting to empty virtuosity. The interplay with the ensemble is conversational rather than competitive: motifs are passed around, ideas are developed collectively, and the groove remains supple and relaxed. This LP stands as a reference for subtle, intelligent jazz guitar - a recording that many musicians and listeners return to again and again. Elemental, the label behind this LP edition, is known for its carefully curated catalogue of jazz releases and reissues. With a strong focus on sound quality, historically important sessions and tasteful packaging, Elemental has built a reputation among collectors and serious listeners who value both musical substance and presentation. Their releases typically pay close attention to audio fidelity and contextual information, making classic albums like "Concierto" accessible in editions that respect the music's original spirit. Jim Hall (1930-2013) is celebrated as one of the most influential jazz guitarists in history. Renowned for his refined tone, melodic clarity and compositional approach to improvisation, he played a pivotal role in shaping modern jazz guitar aesthetics. Over his long career he worked with many of the greats of jazz and left an enduring legacy as a bandleader, sideman and composer. His recordings are frequently cited by fellow musicians as benchmarks of taste, subtlety and musical intelligence, and "Concierto" is often singled out as a key work that captures his artistry at a particularly inspired peak. |
