Immolation is an American death metal band from Yonkers, New York. Formed in 1986 by guitarist Robert Vigna and bassist Ross Dolan, the group has released nine studio albums to date. Immolation’s music combines elements of traditional heavy metal with a more extreme sound that incorporates blast beats and dissonant guitar riffs into their compositions. The lyrics often focus on themes such as religion, philosophy, politics and personal struggles while also exploring darker topics like mortality or nihilism. The members of Immolation have been credited for helping shape the genre known today as “death-doom” which blends together slow tempos with crushingly heavy guitars creating a unique atmosphere within each song they create; this style was further developed over time through experimentation between different genres including blackened thrash/speed metal (as heard on Unholy Cult) progressive rock (Close To A World Below), doom/sludge (Shadows In The Light).
