Hole is an American rock band that was formed in Los Angeles in 1989. The band is led by its founder and vocalist, Courtney Love. Throughout its history, Hole has undergone several lineup changes but has always been associated with angst-filled lyrics, raw guitar riffs, and a punk rock aesthetic. Courtney Love formed Hole in 1989 after stints with several other bands. Hole's original lineup consisted of Love on vocals and guitar, Eric Erlandson on guitar, Jill Emery on bass, and Caroline Rue on drums. The band released their debut album, Pretty on the Inside, in 1991. The album was characterized by its abrasive sound and confrontational lyrics, and it garnered critical acclaim in underground circles. Hole's breakthrough came with their second album, Live Through This, released in 1994. The album was an instant commercial success and established the band as one of the most important acts in the grunge movement. Live Through This featured a more polished sound than their debut, with catchy hooks and radio-friendly singles like "Doll Parts" and "Miss World." The album was also notable for its feminist themes and Love's iconic image as a rebellious, fearless frontwoman. The success of Live Through This was followed by a period of turmoil for the band. Love's husband, Kurt Cobain, committed suicide in 1994, and she was often portrayed by the media as a tragic figure. Hole's third album, Celebrity Skin, was released in 1998 and represented a significant departure from the band's earlier sound. The album was produced by Michael Beinhorn and featured a more mainstream pop-rock sound. Despite mixed reviews, Celebrity Skin was a commercial success and included the hit singles "Malibu" and "Awful." After the release of Celebrity Skin, Hole underwent several lineup changes, and Love continued to release music under the band's name. In 2010, the band reunited with Love, Erlandson, and new members to perform live shows. However, the reunion was short-lived, and Love announced in 2015 that she had disbanded Hole entirely. Hole's music was characterized by its unapologetic, cathartic lyrics and Love's passionate vocal delivery. The band's influence on alternative rock and punk rock music is undeniable, and their legacy has continued to inspire generations of musicians.
