Description:

From New Line Cinema, Peter Jackson and Warner Bros. comes J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, brought to the big screen in an epic trilogy.

Weta Workshop was thrilled to return to Middle-earth once again, contributing design, specialty props and specialty costumes to all three films.

Weta Workshop's authentic prop replicas are designed by the very same artists and technicians who work on our movies, using the same techniques and materials. We treat our prop replicas with the same level of care, quality and attention to detail that we bring to our film work.

Few escaped the fire of the Dragon Smaug when he fell with death and ruin upon the Dwarf realm of Erebor beneath the Lonely Mountain.

Even fewer expected to find King Thror or his son Thrain among the survivors, but against all hope the Longbeards had escaped the sack of the city by way of a secret passage.

Centuries later, the precious key to this back door to the mountain kingdom would find its way into the hands of Thorin Oakenshield, grandson of Thror and the heir to Erebor - and with it, hope of restoring his throne.

The Key to Erebor was designed by Concept Art Director John Howe and created for the film by the artists at the 3Foot7 Art Department in Wellington, New Zealand. This prop replica has been cast from moulds of the original prop. It is cast in metal (Zinc Alloy) and comes on a stand made of polyurethane.

Large and heavy, it is the kind of key you just know would open something important. Like the back door to a lost Dwarven Kingdom.

Product Features:

  • 1:1 scale
  • Made from high-quality zinc-alloy - heavy!
  • Ultra-detailed and realistic - exact replica of the prop used in-game
  • Comes with a display stand

"Our authentic prop replicas and collectibles are designed by the very same artists who have worked on the three films, so effectively they come straight from Middle-earth"

- Richard Taylor - CEO & Co-founder, Weta Workshop

*Please note: This product was designed and prototyped at Weta Workshop. Images are of a pre-production prototype. Each piece is painted by hand and slight variations will occur.

"The Hobbit: Key to Erebor" by Weta Workshop is a finely crafted collectible replica that brings to life one of the most iconic symbols from "The Hobbit" film trilogy. Designed as a detailed reproduction of the key entrusted to Thorin Oakenshield, this piece is intended for collectors, fans of Middle-earth, and lovers of high-quality film memorabilia. Made from durable metal alloy and finished to resemble aged, dwarven-forged steel, the key features precisely sculpted lines, crisp runic details and a weighty, authentic feel in the hand. Typical technical characteristics include a solid-cast body (no moving parts), a length that makes it suitable for display on shelves or in cabinets, and a surface treatment that emphasizes contrast between raised and recessed elements, enhancing the intricate geometry of the original prop.

In use, "The Hobbit: Key to Erebor" functions primarily as a display piece and conversation starter. It can be showcased on a stand, in a glass cabinet, mounted in a frame alongside other Middle-earth memorabilia, or used as a centerpiece in a themed collection. Fans often integrate such keys into cosplay outfits, photo shoots or film-themed events, where its realistic appearance adds authenticity to costumes and sets. The robust construction also makes it suitable for regular handling by adult collectors, while the carefully smoothed edges improve comfort and safety when being held or presented.

The advantages of this product lie in its faithful design, collectible value and emotional resonance. As an officially licensed item created by Weta Workshop - the studio that worked on the original props and visual effects for "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" films - the key offers a level of accuracy and artistic integrity that generic replicas typically cannot match. Each piece reflects Weta Workshop's experience in prop-making, miniature building and world design, giving fans a tangible link to the cinematic universe of Middle-earth. For collectors, such a replica can be a long-term keepsake that holds or increases its sentimental and display value over time. It is also an ideal gift for enthusiasts who appreciate film history and artisan craftsmanship.

Weta Workshop is a New Zealand-based creative design and manufacturing studio known for its work on major film, television and game productions. Over the years, Weta has become synonymous with meticulously crafted props, armor, creatures and miniatures. The company has publicly emphasized responsible workshop practices in areas such as material use, workshop safety and long-term durability of the pieces they create, aiming to produce items that last and can be cherished for many years rather than quickly discarded. By investing in well-made collectibles like "The Hobbit: Key to Erebor," customers choose a durable product designed to be enjoyed over the long term, helping to reduce the cycle of short-lived, throwaway goods.

When you purchase a carefully crafted, officially licensed replica from a studio like Weta Workshop, you support high-quality creative work, skilled artisanship and a culture of valuing long-lasting objects. This can be a conscious decision to favor enduring, meaningful items over mass-produced, disposable products. Your choice helps sustain the creative teams behind the worlds you love and encourages production practices that prioritize longevity and attention to detail - a small but real contribution to more responsible consumption.
