Description:
In this recording Sandra Lied Haga and Katya Apekisheva present two French cello sonatas from the late 19th century. Cesar Franck (1822-90) composed his Violin Sonata when hewas 63 years old, and this Sonata was later arranged for cello. Franck's younger colleague Rita Strohl (1865-1941) composed her "Great Dramatic" Cello Sonata in 1892.
The CD "Werke für Cello und Klavier" by Sandra Lied Haga (cello) and Katya Apekisheva (piano) presents an intimate and finely balanced dialogue between two exceptional chamber musicians. The program focuses on the rich, lyrical and often introspective repertoire for cello and piano, highlighting both the singing quality of the cello and the subtle, color-sensitive role of the piano. With a strong emphasis on clarity of phrasing, natural rubato and a warm, full-bodied tone, this recording offers interpretations that feel both deeply considered and emotionally immediate, making the works accessible to newcomers while remaining rewarding for seasoned listeners. The production values ensure a transparent yet rich sound image, so that every nuance of bowing, articulation and pedal work is clearly perceptible. This disc will appeal to connoisseurs of chamber music as well as to anyone looking for a concentrated, soulful listening experience centered on the intimate partnership between cello and piano.
Sandra Lied Haga and Katya Apekisheva bring together complementary artistic personalities: a cello voice that combines lyrical warmth and structural awareness with a pianist whose playing is marked by sensitivity, sonic imagination and chamber-music instinct. Their collaboration is characterized by a keen sense of balance and mutual listening, avoiding any sense of competition between the instruments. Instead, they shape long lines together, allow thematic material to wander naturally between cello and piano, and give the music space to breathe. Both artists are active on the international concert stage and have attracted attention through their work in chamber music settings; this recording reflects that experience in its organic ensemble playing and refined stylistic understanding. The result is a convincing artistic statement that underscores the timeless appeal of the cello-piano repertoire.
