| Description: | Here's the original CD as released by the Virgin subsidiary Caroline, in the early '70s. Hugely influential at the time, and still legendary, this is just Fred alone with electric and acoustic guitars, and the help of multiple pick ups, scrapers, and countless techniques for getting new sounds out of the guitar. At the time it impressed Brian Eno, Bill Laswell and John Zorn so much that Fred got to work with them. It also launched his career as a solo improviser of world stature, which he remains to this day.Recorded in 4 days at Kaleidophon Studios, London in 1974.

Instead of presenting conventional melodic themes, the album explores sound itself: resonances, feedback, harmonics, percussive attacks and fragile textures that stretch the expressive possibilities of the instrument. Each track feels like a sonic laboratory where silence, noise and tone interact, resulting in a listening experience that is both intimate and daring. The music ranges from delicate, almost transparent passages to dense, abstract soundscapes, always driven by Frith's curiosity and precise control over his instrument. This makes "GUITAR SOLOS" an essential document for listeners interested in experimental music, avant-garde rock and the outer limits of guitar performance.
Fred Frith is an influential guitarist, composer and improviser, known above all for his work in the experimental and avant-rock scenes. He first came to wider attention through his role in pioneering groups of the progressive and experimental underground, and has since become an important figure in free improvisation and contemporary experimental music. Over the decades he has collaborated with a wide range of musicians and ensembles, bridging genres from rock to modern composition and sound art. His reputation rests on his unique guitar language: extended techniques, unconventional tunings and a fearless willingness to treat the guitar as an open sonic universe rather than a fixed, traditional instrument. "GUITAR SOLOS" is widely regarded as one of the key recordings that defined his artistic identity and influenced generations of adventurous guitarists.
The CD is released by Fred Recor, a label dedicated to presenting music that values artistic freedom over commercial formulas. Instead of chasing trends, Fred Recor focuses on carefully curated projects that document singular musical voices and long-term artistic developments. The label's releases typically emphasize high production standards, detailed documentation and a close, trust-based collaboration with the artists. In the case of "GUITAR SOLOS", Fred Recor underlines its commitment to preserving important works of experimental music and making them accessible to listeners who seek challenging, boundary-pushing sounds. This alignment between artist and label results in a release that feels coherent, uncompromising and historically significant for the avant-garde guitar tradition. |
