| Description: | First released in 1963, and later reissued by Smithsonian Folkways to commemorate the folk publication Broadside Magazine, Broadside Ballads, Vol. 1 features artists such as Blind Boy Grunt (Bob Dylan), Peter La Farge, Phil Ochs, and Pete Seeger. With topical songs that vary in subject from civil rights to Vietnam and the nuclear arms race, Broadside Ballads, Vol. 1 is at once a staunch and elucidating account of a generation at odds with the world around it. Recorded in Broadside's cramped New York apartment, the album is spontaneous and intimate in approach and features vocals, guitar, banjo, and drums. Contains the tracks "The Ballad of Old Monroe," "Faubus Foibles," "I Will Not Go Down Under the Ground (Let Me Die in My Footsteps)," "Only a Hobo," "Talking Devil," "Ain't Gonna Let Segregation Turn US Around," and "I Can See a New Day," which are not on The Best of Broadside 1962-1988. Liner notes include lyrics, photos, newspaper articles, sheet music, and writing by Gordon Friesen."Broadside Ballads 1 / Var" on CD is a carefully curated audio journey into the world of broadside ballads - the narrative, socially sharp songs that once circulated on printed sheets in streets, taverns, and marketplaces. This compilation gathers a variety of interpretations ("Var") to showcase the breadth of the tradition: from stark, intimate performances that highlight the storytelling core, to fuller arrangements that underline the songs' emotional power. Expect tales of everyday life, political tensions, love, loss, and moral conflict, presented in a way that feels both historically grounded and surprisingly contemporary. The focus of this CD lies on stylistic diversity within the broadside ballad genre: contrasting vocal timbres, different regional flavours, and a range of tempos and moods create a rich, varied listening experience ideal for folk enthusiasts, cultural historians, or anyone curious about the roots of modern singer-songwriting and protest music.
The artist credit "Broadside Ballads" here functions more as an umbrella for the project and its concept than as a conventional single band identity, underscoring that the heart of the release is the repertoire itself and the variety of performances included. As a result, the album works almost like an audio anthology: you can dip into individual tracks to explore specific stories, or listen from start to finish as a coherent, historically tinged soundscape.
The manufacturer FOWY presents this release with an emphasis on solidity and collector appeal. Known for focusing on niche and archival-minded material, FOWY typically favours clear, no-nonsense packaging and an audio presentation that respects the character of the original recordings. With "Broadside Ballads 1 / Var", FOWY positions itself as a label for listeners who value cultural heritage and stylistic depth as much as sound quality, making this CD a fitting addition to any serious folk or history-of-song collection. |
