Description:Swiss thrashers Algebra have flown under the radar a bit compared to some in the retro-thrash pack, but perhaps that's for the best. What they have done on their two prior full-lengths, and continue on ther newest one, Pulse?, is not pitched at the casual crowd that briefly made silly lyrics about moshing and reheated Slayer riffs so popular. Algebra are more earnest and less fashion-forward than that, creating a mix of Bay Area thrash aesthetics with some taste of the technicality and intricacy of their countrymates in Coroner. Lyrics are serious and dark; songs are fully-realized explorations of their chosen genre, long after most bands stopped putting much effort into their writing. Pulse?, like it's predecessors, is an excellent outing that would sit comfortably on shelves next to any number of genre classics as well as revered but lesser-known favorites of the '80s and early '90s underground.
"Pulse?" is a thoughtfully crafted CD release by the artist Algebra, published by USAX. The album title suggests a strong focus on rhythm, dynamics and emotional undercurrents, and the CD format makes it ideal both for collectors and for listeners who value tangible, high-quality audio media. Across its tracks, "Pulse?" explores musical structures built on recurring motifs and evolving patterns, creating a sense of motion and tension that gradually unfolds. The compositions invite focused listening: subtle changes in harmony and texture reveal themselves over time, rewarding repeated plays and careful attention to detail. Whether consumed on a hi-fi system or in a more intimate headphone setting, the production centers on clarity and spatial depth, allowing each element in the mix to breathe.
Algebra is presented here as a project deeply interested in structure, contrast and the interplay between precision and emotion. The artist's name hints at a methodical, almost architectural approach to music-making, where each track feels like a carefully solved equation of sound. Rather than relying on superficial hooks, Algebra builds pieces from interlocking lines, nuanced rhythmic figures and atmospheric layers, resulting in an immersive experience that balances intellect and feeling. This release positions Algebra as a project for listeners who enjoy music that is both engaging and reflective, with a strong emphasis on mood and sonic detail.
USAX, as manufacturer, stands for solid, reliable production standards and a strong orientation towards high-quality physical releases. The label focuses on carefully realized pressings and durable packaging that protect the disc and artwork over the long term. By working with artists like Algebra, USAX underlines its commitment to distinctive, artist-driven projects that place sound quality and conceptual coherence at the center. With "Pulse?", the collaboration between Algebra and USAX results in a CD that is not only a listening experience but also a well-made object for any serious music collection.
